Robert Pattinson steps into a dramatic new role in the A24 thriller Primetime, portraying NBC journalist Chris Hansen. The film centers on Hansen’s real-life television program, To Catch a Predator, which aired from 2004 to 2007 and focused on catching alleged child abusers.
Having welcomed his first child with Suki Waterhouse in March 2024, Pattinson finds the film's premise deeply unsettling. "It's both the most terrifying thing that can happen to you, whether you're a parent, or even if you're not," he said during a London Film Festival screening. He described the subject matter as crossing a line that parents instinctively fear.
The original broadcast series drew massive ratings but sparked ongoing debates about the boundary between investigative reporting, law enforcement, and reality entertainment. Pattinson acknowledged that the program created a fast-track solution for addressing child abuse, yet warned that the drive for powerful television pushed the format into problematic territory.
He noted that while mainstream television moved away from this style of programming, the content simply migrated elsewhere. Pattinson was drawn to the project by tracking how the early 2000s sting operations evolved into a dominant force online. The format expanded rapidly and now operates as one of the largest predator-catching networks on social media.
