A Black Sea blockade that has trapped millions of tons of grain is pushing Ukrainian farmers to abandon next year's planting, threatening global food supply chains. After a strong harvest, Oleksandr Chumak and other growers in the Odesa region are canceling 2027 crop plans because domestic prices have collapsed and almost 80% of their grain cannot be sold at a profit.

The war has filled storage facilities from Ukraine to Russia, leaving farmers with swollen inventories and empty pockets. Andrii Dykun, chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council, said the financial pressure is breaking operations. "For the farmers, it's very difficult because we need to pay taxes, we need to pay rent for land, and now we are not able to do this because we are not able to sell anything," he said. Only rapeseed and sunflower seeds are moving, and even that volume falls short of covering costs.

Lenders are trying to keep the sector afloat, but capital remains trapped in warehouses. PrivatBank provided 1.53 billion hryvnia ($34.2 million) in working capital to agribusinesses between June and August, more than double the 718 million hryvnia lent in the same period last year. Yevhen Zaihraiev, a senior executive at the state-owned bank, explained that funds are stuck in grain inventories while farms still need cash for operating expenses and sowing campaigns. He noted that producers with storage are waiting for better prices, while others are selling cheap to stay liquid.

Farmers are adjusting their planting strategies to survive. Many are scaling back corn and barley, which require expensive fertilizer, and shifting toward oilseeds and niche crops that cost less to move. The decision comes amid relentless military pressure. Chumak said drone and missile strikes continue to make daily work unpredictable, with explosions happening just hundreds of meters from homes. The sector has already survived farm takeovers, landmines, and labor shortages since Russia's full-scale assault began in early 2022.

The export collapse is rippling through global markets. Before the war, Ukraine and Russia supplied more than half of the world's sunflower oil and 14% of its wheat. This August, Ukraine shipped only 981,000 tonnes of grain and legumes, down about 58% from the previous year. Alternative routes through Poland, Romania, and the Danube River are struggling to compensate. Low water levels, damaged bridges, and political resistance to transit have forced shipments onto slow and expensive rail and road networks that cannot handle typical volumes.

The blockage is currently keeping commodity prices elevated outside Russia and Ukraine. But analysts warn that a diplomatic solution could instantly crash those prices. Benoit Fayaud, a grains analyst at Expana, said reopening Black Sea ports would flood the market with cheap supply. "They have such big stocks it will be bearish for the market all over the world," he said, noting that a deal could drop grain prices by dozens of dollars and flip market dynamics with little warning.
