England women's rugby team has appointed Shaun Edwards to a short-term coaching consultancy role for the remainder of the WXV Global Series. The 59-year-old will work alongside defence coach Sarah Hunter as the squad prepares for the tournament's final fixtures.
The hiring comes after England's 39-Test winning streak ended in a 26-26 draw against Canada last weekend. Edwards brings extensive high-level experience to the squad, having recently left his position as France men's defence coach after securing three Six Nations titles.
His career spans rugby league and union, including 36 caps for Great Britain and coaching stints with London Wasps, Wales, and a six-year tenure with France. He has never previously worked for England's men or women's programmes.
England head coach John Mitchell highlighted Edwards' track record and his specific interest in the women's game. "His coaching credentials are exceptional and his experience at the highest level of the game speaks for itself," Mitchell said. The head coach noted that Hunter is eager to work with Edwards to sharpen the squad's defensive systems ahead of their next fixture.
Edwards, who recently told reporters he is open to offers until he secures a permanent position, emphasized his national pride. "I'm a proud Englishman and everybody loves to represent their country, don't they? I'm no different," he said. The Red Roses will begin their WXV campaign against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
