Two of the 2024 NFL draft's top selections left Sunday's games with serious injuries, handing early season setbacks to the Chicago Bears and Washington.
Caleb Williams suffered a hamstring issue in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings and was carted off the field. The Bears fell 9-3, marking a 56-point drop from their week one scoring output. Initial reports suggest the injury may not be as severe as it appeared.
Washington's Jayden Daniels, the second pick in that same draft, left a loss to the Dallas Cowboys with an elbow injury. He would miss time as Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes in a 37-20 victory. Prescott passed Tony Romo for the franchise record with 249 career touchdown passes.
Other teams found their rhythm after shaky starts. The Kansas City Chiefs returned to form with a 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts. Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns, his best outing in three years. Travis Kelce added 101 yards and a score, while Kenneth Walker contributed 178 total yards. Harrison Butker kicked the winning field goal as time expired.
The Green Bay Packers also needed extra time, beating the New York Jets 20-17. They erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to end a six-game losing streak.
Several teams already sitting at 2-0 showed no signs of slowing down. The Seattle Seahawks beat the Arizona Cardinals 31-7 to win their 12th straight game. Drew Lock threw three touchdown passes, including an 82-yard strike to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. San Francisco started 2-0 with a 35-15 road win over the Miami Dolphins, scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions. Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle found the end zone, while Brock Purdy accounted for three scores. Cincinnati kept their perfect record with a 20-6 win in Houston, and Philadelphia survived a late rally to beat Tennessee 20-17. Jalen Hurts threw a touchdown pass to Darius Cooper with just nine seconds left.
Upsets defined the rest of the slate. The New Orleans Saints defeated the Baltimore Ravens 24-17 in their home opener. Tyler Shough scored on a play where the ball was largely unsighted, and Lamar Jackson threw a late interception. The Las Vegas Raiders beat the Los Angeles Chargers 26-14 to start 2-0. DeShaun Watson threw a fourth-quarter touchdown in Cleveland's road win over Tampa Bay, a game delayed by two hours for weather.
Atlanta's struggles deepened as they fell 34-3 to the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons became the fourth team since 1978 to fail to reach an opponent's red zone in their first two games. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand threw a pick-six after replacing Cooper Rush.
