Chelsea finally found the defensive control they have been searching for this season, routing Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday behind a dominant midfield pairing.
Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson started together for the first time, providing the balance that allowed manager Xabi Alonso to deploy a free-scoring attack. The 36-year-old Henderson delivered the standout display, scoring his first two goals for the club and setting up Morgan Rogers for the second strike. His opening goal arrived in just 66 seconds, and his assist came at two minutes and 30 seconds. The performance made him the third-oldest player to score and assist in the same match for Chelsea.
Caicedo anchored the middle of the park in his 150th appearance. Alonso dropped him deep, tucking him into the back three during attacking phases. The Ecuador international misplaced only two passes, recorded the highest completion rate among starters, and won more tackles than any teammate before being substituted after 72 minutes. Chelsea's win rate in the Premier League jumps to 48.1% when he plays, compared to 25% without him.
"You always want to have Moises on the pitch," Alonso said. "With him, we have a better midfield area and when you are better in the middle, you have a more complete team." The manager praised Henderson's work rate and tactical discipline alongside his goals. The veteran midfielder arrived on a free from Brentford as part of a summer strategy to add experience to the league's youngest squad. Chelsea also signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Danny Welbeck, marking the first time since 2022 that the club brought in players over the age of 30.
The attacking trio of Joao Pedro, Palmer, and Rogers have already netted 15 goals in six matches. Chelsea still concede the most goals in the division at 13, and Alonso acknowledged that set-piece defending needs improvement. If the midfield duo can continue to shield the defense, the Blues will move closer to climbing the table. Captain Reece James remains sidelined with a knee injury, leaving Henderson and Caicedo to anchor the lineup for the foreseeable future.
