European football’s governing body has opened a formal disciplinary investigation after an Israeli player was accused of spitting on Ireland’s athletic coach during Sunday’s Nations League match in Serbia.
UEFA confirmed the probe follows an allegation that the incident occurred around half-time in or near a tunnel at the TSC Arena in Backa Topola. The organization appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to review official match reports and determine whether any player misconduct warrants sanctions.
“I was there. I’m not going to comment. It’s something a disciplinary committee will look at,” Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson told reporters. He acknowledged that tensions flared on and off the pitch but said his squad managed to prevent the situation from escalating. Hallgrimsson added that he believed the opposing team aimed to intimidate his players, and he praised his squad for maintaining control under pressure.
Israel’s manager Ran Ben-Shimon stated he was inside the dressing room with his staff during the half-time break and did not witness the confrontation. He said he would review the footage and official accounts before providing a further response.
The fixture, played behind closed doors, concluded with a draw. Both coaching staffs emphasized that despite the charged atmosphere, their players adhered to the rules and avoided further conflict.
