Traders on the prediction market Kalshi now assign a 75% chance that the United States will plan or operate more than 5,100 data centers before 2027. The probability jumped from 60% in just two weeks, reflecting strong market confidence in the industry. Data Center Map currently lists more than 4,700 facilities across the country. Virginia holds the largest share with over 670 planned and active sites. Texas follows with 537 centers, while California accounts for more than 200.
The rapid buildout has sparked opposition in several states. Residents and activists warn that large-scale projects will drive up local utility bills and drain regional water supplies. Tech companies continue to push forward with expansions in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico despite the pushback. Some developments have already hit regulatory roadblocks. Oracle sent its developer a force majeure notice for a planned site in New Mexico to guard against potential cost overruns. The company targets a 2028 launch for the facility, but progress stalled this summer after state regulators rejected applications for a natural gas pipeline intended to power it.
