Meta’s Muse AI app has claimed the top spot on Apple’s U.S. iOS free app chart, surpassing ChatGPT and other major competitors just days after its release. The application accumulated 730,000 downloads in roughly five days following its Sep. 8 launch, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower.
The app lets users direct AI agents to handle everyday web tasks, including filling out electronic forms and organizing email inboxes. It runs on Meta’s Muse Spark family of AI models and represents CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s latest push into the AI agent market.
While the base app remains free, Meta is introducing optional monthly subscriptions priced at $20 or $100 depending on usage levels. The launch triggered a more than 11% surge in Meta’s stock price on Monday, signaling investor confidence in a revenue stream that operates outside the company’s core advertising business.
Industry watchers note a shift in who these tools serve. "I think up to this point most of the agentic use cases have not really been for normal people," Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said. She added that the new tools are now poised for wider consumer use. Rasgon also questioned whether users prioritize security over privacy when handing over personal data to the app.
The app's debut arrives as the tech sector faces intensifying scrutiny over AI safety and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Meta recently agreed to pay roughly $17 billion to settle a lawsuit from a coalition of state attorneys general over alleged harms to minors on its platforms. Historical patterns suggest early download spikes often fade quickly, as seen with previous releases like OpenAI’s Sora and Meta’s own Vibes AI video tool.
