Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka will miss the upcoming international camp after admitting to acquiring a fake COVID-19 vaccination certificate. The Swiss Football Association confirmed the decision on Monday, ending speculation about his availability for the squad.
The midfielder issued a public message acknowledging his actions. "Today I see clearly that this path was not right. It was a mistake. I am sorry." Xhaka, who plays for Sunderland in the Premier League, said he is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.
SFV president Peter Knaebel welcomed the player's willingness to address the issue directly. "We welcome Granit taking this step. At the same time, we came to the joint conclusion that it is in the best interest of the team to complete this gathering without him." Leadership decided the move would keep the camp focused as they prepare for UEFA Nations League fixtures.
The national team assembled in Belek, Turkiye, to prepare for a series of matches. Switzerland will travel to face North Macedonia and Scotland before returning home to play Slovenia and North Macedonia again.
The governing body will review Xhaka's status once the international window closes. The 33-year-old made his international debut in 2011 and currently holds Switzerland's all-time appearance record with 152 caps.
