Egyptian squash player Amina Orfi has become the youngest women's world number one at 19 years and two months. She claimed the ranking with a victory at the Qatar Classic, defeating Egypt's Hania El Hammamy to secure the title.
Orfi won the final 3-2, with game scores of 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 12-10. The win marks her first Platinum title and third major victory, adding to her 15th career win. She overtook the 26-year-old El Hammamy, who had held the top spot.
The achievement breaks a record that stood for decades. New Zealand's Susan Devoy previously held the youngest ranking at 20 years and two months in 1984. Orfi's rise places her firmly at the top of the sport.
Her breakthrough follows a dominant season. In May, she became the youngest world champion at 18 years and 10 months. She defeated then world number two Nour El-Sherbini in a five-game final at the World Championships in Egypt. That result made her the first player to hold both the world junior and senior PSA championship titles at the same time.
Orfi has remained in the world's top three since last October. After the final match, she described the moment as a lifelong goal. “It feels amazing,” she said. “To become world champion and become world number one in the same year is a dream that I’ve had since I was very young and I really want to enjoy it.” She now plans to maintain her performance level and defend her position at the top of the rankings.
