India’s National Stock Exchange secured more than $10 billion in bids for its $2.3 billion initial public offering, closing the sale at 5.7 times the available shares. The listing, which drew heavy demand from institutional and high-net-worth buyers, represents the largest public offering in India this year and the second largest ever.
Before the public sale, the exchange raised 67.5 billion rupees ($704 million) from anchor investors including the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and the Life Insurance Corporation of India. The process to list the exchange began in 2016, and it now ranks behind only Hyundai Motor India’s $3.3 billion offering in 2024.
The exchange dominates India’s trading landscape, holding a 93% share of the cash market, nearly 100% of equity futures, and 75% of equity options. Brokerage Geojit Financial Services noted that the exchange's "asset-light business model enables consistently high margins and cash generation," pointing to steady profitability as retail participation expands.
Investors are paying a premium for that stability. The IPO values the exchange at a price-to-earnings ratio of 42.9 times, based on the upper price band and earnings through March 2026. That multiple sits well above the trading range for major U.S. exchanges, which generally trade below 24 times earnings. Nasdaq currently trades at 23.6 times, while Intercontinental Exchange trades at 21.9 times.
The pricing reflects a broader shift in how Indians manage their money. Equity investments now make up 15.2% of annual household financial savings, up from just 2% in the financial year ending March 2012. An official economic survey described these holdings as a "significant component of financial wealth." Local participation continues to accelerate, with the Bombay Stock Exchange recording 35 million new investor registrations in 2025 alone, providing a buffer against foreign market swings.
