Lego fraudster linked to major insurance scam in UK

Fraudulent insurance claims in the UK totaled £1.34bn last year, a 14% increase driven by higher average claim values despite a slight dip in overall case numbers. The average payout reached £14,300, marking the second-highest figure on record. Meanwhile, the total number of detected claims fell to 93,900, a 2.7% drop from 2024.

Scammers are chasing larger individual payouts rather than flooding the system with smaller ones. "Although the rate of detected insurance fraud fell slightly last year, our data shows that fraudsters are targeting much bigger payouts," said Mark Allen, head of fraud and financial crime at the ABI. He also warned that the wider availability of artificial intelligence will likely encourage new exploitation methods.

One of the most prominent cases involved a collector sentenced to 28 months in prison. He submitted false claims to Axa Insurance between 2021 and 2022 for high-value items like MacBooks, televisions, gaming consoles, and fishing equipment. Investigators later found the exact collectible Lego sets he reported stolen sitting in his living room during a 2023 search. He was ordered to repay £14,000.

The ABI highlighted other severe cases alongside the Lego scam. A man received a 20-month sentence for manipulating women he met on dating sites into staging car crashes. Another individual was handed a four and a half year term for submitting over £300,000 in fake travel medical emergency claims using multiple forged identities.

Motor insurance continues to be the primary target for scammers, accounting for 55% of all reported cases. Exaggerated loss remains the most frequent method, with 26,900 instances where claimants deliberately inflated the true cost of their losses.

"Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime and those who commit it increase the cost of premiums for honest customers," warned Det Ch Insp Simon Klust, head of the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department at the City of London Police. He noted that the 250 cases detected daily last year represent only a fraction of the actual problem, adding that the true scale is unfortunately likely to be just the tip of the iceberg.
